You left your plans at home, right? Then you're all set.

Hi there!
I'm Dokko, your guide at Amudena.
I'm actually a burr seed, the kind that hitches a ride on passersby's clothes and travels.
This time, I'm sticking to you!
“Amudena” is Korean for “anywhere.” Wherever the wheel lands, that’s where you’re going.

Just four promises before we go!

Stay 1Eat 1Café 1See 1 Stay 1, Eat 3, Café 1, See 2...
calling things by number is handy.
Like "Call Stay 3!"

I'll tell you just a little of what I know.
A city right in the middle of North Chungcheong, with the Namhan River flowing through. To the east spreads the huge Chungju Lake.
Down south in Suanbo-myeon there are hot springs, and in town there's Tangeumdae and Jungangtap Park.
This is the hometown of Ureuk, the gayageum master. In fall, the Ureuk Cultural Festival is held!

💡TIP! Dates change every year. Quietly check with 1330 before you go.

I only picked places with phone numbers.
Whether there's a free room...
you'll have to call to find out!
💡TIP! Addresses are kept in Korean so you can show them to locals.
On Jujeongsan-ro in Suanbo-myeon. The hot spring foot bath trail is right nearby!
A stay on Georyong-gil in Yongsan-dong. The rooms are Korean-style.
In Jungangtap-myeon. With rooms for 2, 3 and up to 5 people, it's good for groups. Check-in is 14:00 off-season, 15:00 peak season.
On Jujeongsan-ro, right in the heart of Suanbo hot springs. Pick a Korean-style or Western-style room.
A resort in Angseong-myeon. There are 'pet' rooms, so you can bring your pet along!
A pension in Dongnyang-myeon. The rooms are named Wild Grape, Wild Raspberry and Sound of Wind. Mountain-village vibes from the names alone, right?
A hotel on Hoam-daero. They say there are standard and twin rooms, plus ondol (heated-floor) rooms.
A stay in Jungangtap-myeon. With a name like 'A Day Above the Lake', you can't help looking forward to the view, right?

I can't tell if they're famous, either.
Just remember one signature dish and go!
I also put in two cafés for a cup of tea!
A raw trout place in Dongnyang-myeon. They say there's spicy mandarin fish stew too. Closed Mondays (open if Monday is a holiday).
A monkfish place in Angseong-myeon. Pick braised, spicy stew or clear soup! Open year-round.
The name says gukbap, but the signature is snail ssambap (rice with leaf wraps)! Opens at 8:30 am, open year-round.
A naengmyeon place in Gwana-gol. Mul naengmyeon is the signature, and there's sliced pressed pork too. Break 3–5 pm, closed Tuesdays.
Handmade hamburg steak in Sotae-myeon! Closes at 3 pm Mon–Thu, closed Sundays.
A tea house in Jihyeon-dong. The signature is omija (five-flavor berry) tea! Opens in the afternoon until late, closed Sundays and Mondays.
A Korean beef restaurant run by Chungju Nonghyup. The hanu platter is the signature, and there's seolleongtang too. Open year-round!
A handmade tofu hot pot place in Sancheok-myeon. Be sure to call about hours before you go.
A café on Chungjuhosu-ro. The Guok Sweet Latte is the signature, and they say there's a mugwort frappuccino too. Check Instagram/Naver for days off!
A café in Danwol-dong. The Danwol sandwich is the signature! From 8 am until night, open year-round.

I picked just 8 spots.
We'll meet the rest on the road.
Called 'Tangeumdae' because Ureuk played his gayageum here. A hill looking down on the Namhan River.

A park by the Namhan River. The seven-story stone pagoda standing in the middle is the 'Jungangtap' (Central Pagoda).
A park on the site of the old Chungju government office. Naengmyeon place 'Samjeong Myeonok' is on the same Gwana street!

A trail where you soak your feet in hot spring water. Stays 'Yuwonjae' and 'Suanbo Sangnok Hotel' are on the same Jujeongsan-ro!

An old temple site in Mireuk-ri, Suanbo-myeon. A stone Buddha, stone lanterns and pagodas are still standing.

From the top, they say the ridges stretching into Chungju Lake look like a pack of crocodiles!
A suspension bridge on 'Jongdaeng-gil', the forest trail around Chungju Lake. Don't be startled when it sways!
A museum of martial arts from around the world, fitting for Chungju, the home of taekkyeon.

Markets are the best way to see a town.
Jayu Market on days with a 5 or 0, Eomjeong and Mokhaeng markets on days with a 3 or 8!
💡TIP! There may be markets not listed here. Ask a local, "여기 장 언제 서요? (yeo-gi jang eon-je seo-yo?)"

The answers aren't in this book.
The locals know the real ones.
💡TIP! Show the Korean sentence as is, or read it out loud.

Keep money talk tidy!
